Phatthalung ( Thai : พัทลุง ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง พัทลุง ) in the Phatthalung province of Thailand . It is the capital of Mueang Phatthalung County ( Amphoe ) and Phatthalung Province in the southern region of Thailand .

geography

Phatthalung is located on the southern foothills of the Tenasserim Mountains on the Malay Peninsula . To the east of the city is the approximately 1,250 km² freshwater sea ​​Thale Luang , which enters the Gulf of Thailand at Songkhla . The surrounding area shows rice fields , and on the nearby plain rise two limestone cliffs that are criss-crossed by cave systems, Ok Thalu and Hua Taek.

The distance to the border with Malaysia in the south is about 100 kilometers.

history

The history of the area around Phatthalung can be traced back to the Srivijaya period - long before Sukhothai . Corresponding finds in the rock temples in the vicinity can still be admired today.

One legend has it that the two characteristic limestone cliffs of the city, Ok Thalu ( pierced breast ) and Hua Taek ( broken head ) are two jealous women who fossils which started fighting for her lover.

Attractions

  • Wat Khuha Suwan - Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) north of the city at the foot of a steep limestone rock with rich decorations and a grotto with interesting golden Buddha images . You can climb the rock and have a wonderful view of the city, the mountains and Thalee Luang.
  • Wat Wang - temple complex from the early Rattanakosin period with an elegant chedi and beautifully preserved frescoes .

Sports

The city is home to the multi-purpose stadium Phattalung Province Stadium with 4021 seats.
