George Malley sees a strange light. The next day he discovers that his mental powers have increased. He uses them to help relatives and friends. In his hometown he becomes an outsider.
Malley goes to San Francisco , where he meets his own kind. This includes a boy who, as a child, read through the novel The Old Man and the Sea that was given to him . It took him half an hour to do this. As a result, the boy's relationship with his father deteriorated.
Malley feels it when his mother goes weak. He calls a friend in his hometown, whom he reveals that he feels he is being watched.
