Phil Sunkel

Philip Charles Sunkel, Jr. (born November 26, 1925 in Zanesville , Ohio ) is an American jazz trumpeter , flugelhorn player , composer and arranger of swing and cool jazz .

Life

At the age of fourteen Sunkel played the cornet, later also the trumpet, and attended the conservatory in Cincinnati . From 1950 he first played in local groups, then worked with Claude Thornhill , Charlie Barnet and other band leaders. In 1955 he played in Stan Getz's band . His style of playing, partly influenced by Bix Beiderbecke , can also be heard on recordings by Junior Bradley , Al Cohn and Don Stratton . In 1956 he made an album with his composition Jazz Concerto Grosso ; Tony Fruscella recorded several of his arrangements. In 1958 Gerry Mulligan and Bob Brookmeyer recorded his composition Jazz Concerto Grosso live, after which Sunkel was also a member of the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and Billy Ver Planck . In the 1960s he took part in recordings by Eddie Lockjaw Davis ( Afro Jaws , 1960) and Gil Evans ( Out of the Cool , 1960). In the 1980s, Sunkel could still be heard on recordings by Dick Meldonian .
