The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra ( Norwegian Bergen filharmoniske orkester ) is a Norwegian orchestra based in Bergen , Vestland .

The musicians perform in the Grieghalle , a building with a capacity of 1,500 people.

history

The organization was founded in 1765 under the name Det Musicalske Selskab and later renamed Musikselskabet Harmonie by the Bergen people .

After World War I there was a competing interest between Bergen and Oslo (then Kristiania) to have the largest orchestra in the country. In 1919 Bergen gave 40 musicians jobs, by 2015 the number rose to 100.

The orchestra has a long tradition of interpreting contemporary classical music. Ludwig van Beethoven's Second Symphony was first performed in the concert hall before it was performed in Berlin in 1804.

The composer Edvard Grieg , whose education is connected with the orchestra, whose conductor he was from 1880 to 1882, bequeathed part of his estate to the orchestra's scholarship foundation. Other composers who directed the ensemble were Arvid Fladmoe , Johan Halvorsen , Iver Holter and others. a.

The orchestra is also available for opera performances ( Bergen Nasjonale Opera ).
