Philip Smith (trumpeter)

Philip Smith is an American trumpeter and music educator.

Smith had his first lessons from his father, the English cornetist Derek Smith . He then studied at the Juilliard School with Edward Treutel and William Vacchiano . From there, Georg Solti brought him to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1975 . In 1978 he moved to the New York Philharmonic Orchestra , of which he was principal trumpeter from 1988 until 2014. He performed with the orchestra as a soloist under conductors such as Zubin Mehta , Kurt Masur , Erich Leinsdorf , Leonard Bernstein , Neeme Järvi , Lorin Maazel , Alan Gilbert and Bramwell Tovey and played numerous premieres and world premieres of works by contemporary composers, including the trumpet concerts by Joseph Turrin (1989), Jacques Hétu (1992) and Lowell Liebermann (2000) and the double concerto for trumpet, trombone and orchestra by Siegfried Matthus (2003).

Smith also worked with various symphonic wind ensembles. He gave the world premiere of Turrins Cronicles with the University of New Mexico Wind Ensemble in 1999 and recorded this work on CD the following year with Stephen Grycs Evensong and Turrins Fandango . In 2008 he premiered Alfred Cohen's … curls of motion… with the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble , and in 2013 Aaron Kernis ' a Voice, a Messenger with the Illinois Wind Ensemble . He has also performed as a soloist with marching bands such as the United States Army Brass Band , Goteborg Brass , Black Dyke Mills and the Rigid Containers Band . the Hannaford Street Silver band and Intrada Brass , the Columbus Brass Band , Triangle Brass Band and Imperial Brass and the Salvation Army Staff Bands including the International Staff Band and was a soloist in 1996 the British Open Brass Band Championships . More recently he has also conducted the New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion (2014) and the Imperial Brass and Gramercy Brass (2015).

Smith worked as a teacher at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music . He has also given courses at the Caramoor International Music Festival , the Grand Teton Music Festival , the Swiss Brass Week , the Bremen Trumpet Days , the Oslo Trumpet Week , the Harmony Ridge Festival , the Scotia Festival of Music , the Le Domaine Forget International Music Academy in Quebec, the Blekinge International Brass Academy (BIBA) in Karlskrona, and the MasterWorks Festival in Winona Lake.

Smith also worked on film soundtracks. He played music by Elliot Goldenthal in Cobb (1994), A Time To Kill (1996) and Sphere , in The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), The Rookie (2002) and The Ladykillers (2004) music by Carter Burwell , in Punchline ( 1998) Music by Gary Anderson and Charles Gross , in Manchurian Candidate (2004) music by Rachel Portman, and in Hitch (2005) music by George Fenton and Alan Elliot . In 2005 Smith became an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music , the following year he received the International Trumpet Guild Honorary Award .
