The Philipp-Melanchthon-Gymnasium Schmalkalden (short: PMG Schmalkalden) is a general education high school in Schmalkalden . It is one of the largest high schools in Thuringia and was named after Philipp Melanchthon, who, together with Martin Luther and the Reformation, is closely related to the city of Schmalkalden.

history

From the establishment in 1894 to the time of National Socialism

The grammar school was inaugurated in 1894 in what was then Lindenstrasse as a girls' school . In 1903/1904 a two-storey extension was added to the north side of the building. The New House was used as an upper secondary school, and the Abitur began . The first high school graduates left school in 1906, but it was not until 1923 that the first female student received a high school diploma.

In 1929/1930 an additional floor was built on the northern extension. At the same time, the Oberrealschule became the Reform Realgymnasium, which used French as the new foreign language . In 1931 girls were allowed to attend all classes of the grammar school for the first time.

The time of National Socialism followed , from which no significant changes have survived.

After the Second World War

In 1946, the law for the democratization of the German school of the state administrations (state governments) was implemented in the post-war years on the basis of orders from the Soviet military administration in Germany (SMAD). By shortening the grammar school time to four years, pupils in grades 5 to 8 could no longer attend this school. In addition, the four-year high school is the 9th through 12th grade in the comprehensive school incorporated.

From 1950 there was increased political influence by the government of the GDR on the education system . By the time the Wall was built , a large part of the teaching staff left the school and fled west. Numerous high school graduates also turned their backs on the GDR.

In 1977 the then expanded high school was given the name Georgi Dimitroff . Partnerships were established with the Montana Foreign Language High School in Bulgaria . This partnership continues today. In 1982, only students in grades 11 and 12 attended the so-called Extended Oberschule (EOS).

From the political turning point in the GDR until today

From 1989 onwards, in the course of reunification, there was a political change , so that in 1990 the 9th and 10th grades were resumed. A year later, the extended high school became a state grammar school and combined school grades 5 to 12. In the same year the number of pupils rose to around 1200. Thus, a second and third building became necessary. Finally, the former Seume school and a branch in Steinbach-Hallenberg were used. The contents of the curriculum were corrected, contacts to the high schools in Hünfeld and Schweinfurt helped the school with the internal democratization process. The new subjects ethics , religion , social studies and economics / law were introduced. In 1994, the first Abitur graduates were passed with the Abitur under German law.

In 1997 the grammar school got its current name Philipp Melanchthon .

Further structural extensions

Major structural changes are also taking place. A new chemistry room, a new physics room and two computer cabinets are being built, and the auditorium is being completely renovated. Two years later, the new sports and multi-purpose hall is handed over to the school administration.

In 1998, various projects for expansion and general renovation, the renovation of the facade and roof as well as the equipment with technical devices and new furniture were started.

A new building for specialist cabinets was built in 1999, and the inauguration of the new building and the connecting wing ( atrium ) to the main building took place a year later. This complex is today's house A. In 2001 the renovated building of the former Seume school was handed over for school operation. In addition, the renovation of the former EOS building (now House B) was completed.

In 2002 all general renovation work was completed. The outdoor area was given its present form.

After the merger with the Werratal-Gymnasium in Schwallungen in August 2005, additional buildings outside the school had to be used in order to provide enough space for the 1200 pupils at times. However, from the 2007/2008 school year onwards, the use of these additional facilities was no longer necessary due to the falling number of pupils.

School profile

In 2007 the new concept of the Student Engineer Academy West Thuringia was introduced at the school .

School partnerships

Every school year there are student encounters with the partner schools Petar Bogdan Gymnasium in Montana (Bulgaria), School No. 17 in Ternopil (Ukraine) and the Collège "Les quatre saisons" in Rodez (France).
