Philipp Klein (born February 16, 1871 in Mannheim ; † May 10, 1907 in Gundelsheim am Neckar ) was a German genre and landscape painter .

Philipp Klein was initially a flag boy in the army, but he suffered an accident and so turned to painting. In 1892 he went to Munich. He spent the following summer on the Fraueninsel on the Chiemsee. There he drew nature and became a private student of Joseph Wopfner . In autumn he went back to Munich and trained himself as a painter. He became a member of the Munich artist group " Scholle ". There he orientated himself strongly to the art of Leo Putz . During a visit to Berlin, Klein met Max Slevogt , whose art also influenced him.

Philipp Klein has exhibited his works in the Munich Glass Palace since 1896 . It was there that he first attracted attention with his work "In thought", from there further works such as "Before the Redoute", "The Yellow Sopha" (1905), "Before Departure", "The Friends", "Nude." with larvae "and" Alissa "(1903) to great success. These pictures received a lot of positive attention because of his, at the time, modern painting style and because they revealed Klein to be a spirited colorist. and since 1899 took part regularly in the exhibitions of the Munich and Berlin Secession . Klein also showed his pictures in the Munich gallery Joseph Brakl & Tannhauser. His works brought him several awards, including a. 1905 a gold medal.

Philipp Klein died at the age of 36 in the Hornegg or Horneck sanatorium .

Today his works can be found in the Kunsthalle Mannheim , in the Sezessiongalerie in Munich and in the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig .
