Philipp Scheitenberger the Elder was the son of the town and foundation curator of Schelklingen and administrator of the Urspring Monastery, Xaver Scheitenberger (baptized 1783–1864) and his wife Maria Anna Baumann (baptized 1782–1863).

From 1847 to 1874 Philipp Scheitenberger the Elder held the office of city ​​school in Schelklingen . Pastor Josef Bärtle described the Schelklingen city schoolmaster Philipp Scheitenberger as a person who "(...) was not a trained specialist, but a practical farmer, but a bright head, which his fellow citizens had therefore brought from the plow to the town hall."

Act

As the city ​​school of Schelklingen, Philipp Scheitenberger was involved from 1847 to 1874 primarily in municipal construction, the promotion of agriculture and forestry , in education and in caring for the poor, the sick and the unemployed.

His commitment to agriculture was particularly important. For example, he campaigned for the establishment of stable feeding as well as the introduction of the Simmenthal cattle breed, the construction of steep slopes to Stotzenhausen, the regulation of dirt roads, the increase in pasture yield through cultures and the establishment of nurseries.

Philipp Scheitenberger managed to develop the city treasury from 6,800 guilders in the course of his term of office into a balance of 3,587 guilders in 1868, despite the inflationary emergency in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the 1850s .

In addition to his office as city school, Philipp Scheitenberger was also a member of the board of directors of the agricultural district association Blaubeuren for many years and was particularly committed to the introduction of agricultural innovations.

Philipp Scheitenberger the Elder also remained privately connected to agriculture throughout his life , and so he accompanied the colonization , reclamation and cultivation of the Siegental near Almendingen by his son Philipp Scheitenberger, who had taken on this task from his father at the young age of 16 had been forced to transfer.

Honors

Philipp Scheitenberger was awarded the gold medal of merit by King Karl von Württemberg in 1869 and a silver medal for his services to the city of Schelklingen and agriculture on the occasion of the royal couple's silver wedding anniversary in 1871 .
