Philip of Hessen-Darmstadt

Philipp von Hessen-Darmstadt (born July 20, 1671 in Darmstadt , † August 11, 1736 in Vienna ) was a prince of Hessen-Darmstadt, imperial field marshal and governor of Mantua .

Life

Philip was a son of Landgrave Ludwig VI. von Hessen-Darmstadt (1630–1678) from his marriage to Elisabeth Dorothea von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1640–1709), daughter of Ernst I von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg .

Philipp married Princess Marie Therese von Croÿ (1673-1714), daughter of Ferdinand François Joseph, Duke of Havré , on March 24, 1693 in Brussels . On the occasion of his marriage, he converted to Catholicism amid violent protests from his mother . Philip served in imperial services in the War of the Spanish Succession , became the owner of a cuirassier regiment and in 1708 became field marshal and commander in chief of the imperial troops in Naples . From 1714 he was governor of the duchy and the fortress of Mantua through Prince Eugene's mediation . There he appointed Antonio Vivaldi as Kapellmeister.
