Photographic associations

In photographic associations lay people interested in photography, manufacturers of articles for photography and photographers came together. Photographic associations were interest groups .

organization

As a rule, a chairman and deputy, a secretary and a treasurer formed the organization. Their task was to invite to the regular meetings, to lead members and / or general meetings, to write minutes and to publish them in the association journals. Another task was to organize exhibitions. The members' photographs were presented here. Only the larger associations initiated exhibitions to which domestic and foreign photographers were invited.

Furnishing

Depending on the size and number of members, clubs had their own club premises / premises that served as a meeting point, exhibition space and library, but also for socializing. Here were u. a. also from the numerous German and foreign language magazines that are dealing with photography in the broadest sense. Photographs were also collected as samples that had been given to the association as gifts. The manufacturers of optical devices for photography also gave the associations utensils so that they could experiment. Some club halls also had various utensils that could be made available to outside photographers.

history

In 1863 the first photographic association was founded in Berlin. The aim of the members was to find out about and exchange the latest findings on technical development. The easier the handling of the photographic device became, the more people became interested in photography. At the beginning of the 1890s, the first clubs were formed in which amateur photographers joined together to form so-called amateur clubs. After the First World War, interest decreased significantly.
