Phyllostylon rhamnoides is a tree in the elm family from central to eastern Brazil , Bolivia , northern Argentina , Paraguay and in Venezuela , Colombia , Central America to southern Mexico and the Caribbean .

description

Phyllostylon rhamnoides grows as a deciduous tree with a narrow crown up to 24 meters high. The trunk diameter reaches up to 70 centimeters. The trunk is corrugated and there may be smaller buttress roots or roots . The rough, gray-brown bark flakes off in smaller plates.

The simple, short-stalked and slightly leathery leaves are alternate. The petioles are up to 4–5 millimeters long. The rough, scaly and entire to the front part more or less serrated or notched leaves are ovate to elliptical and 2–5.5 inches long and 1.5–3.5 inches wide. At the top they are clipped to rounded or pointed, pointed, the base of the leaf is clipped to rounded or slightly heart-shaped. There are small, free stipules .

Phyllostylon rhamnoides is andromonözisch , so male and hermaphrodite flowers can be found on an individual. The short-stemmed flowers appear in axillary, shortly stalked, small bracts underlaid, smaller bunches. They appear on the leafless branches. The small, male or hermaphrodite, stalked flowers are greenish with a simple flower covering . The flowers have a slightly fine-haired 5–8-parted, about 2 millimeter long perianth and up to 5 short stamens as well as an upper, laterally flattened ovary with two uneven, long stigma branches , the male flowers may have a pestle or it is usually missing.

There are wing nuts formed with one large and one small, membranous wings, they are equipped with wing 2.5-4 centimeters long. The large wing, with a thickened and roughly straight edge on one side, is up to 1.7-2.7 centimeters long and 7-14 millimeters wide, the smaller and narrow one is up to 0.7-1 centimeters long and the hard, slightly flattened nut is hairy short.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Taxonomy

The first description of Basionyms Samaroceltis rhamnoides was made in 1887 by Jules Poisson in J. Bot (Morot.) 1: 256. The re-allocation to the genus Phyllostylon was made in 1890 by Paul Hermann Wilhelm Taubert in Oesterr. Bot. Z. 40: 409. Further synonyms are Phyllostylon orthopterum Hallier f. and with some authors also Phyllostylon brasiliense Capan. ex Benth. & Hook.f.

use

The yellowish, heavy wood is hard and durable, it is known as cuta , palo amarillo or palo lanza .
