Physalis longiloba is a plant type from the genus of jujubes ( Physalis ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Vegetative characteristics

Physalis longiloba is a perennial subshrub that forms a slender, horizontally growing and up to 1 m long rhizome as a perennial organ. The stems are up to 90 cm long and have a smooth surface with cork pores . The plants grow prostrate and form roots at the lower nodes , the young plant parts are finely haired with simple, undivided, non-glandular trichomes .

The leaves are alternate at the base, but further up they become pairs, with a large leaf facing a smaller leaf about 1/3 the size. The leaf stalks are 1.5 to 3.6 cm long. The leaf blades of the larger leaves 3.6 to 7.9 (rarely up to 10.2) cm long and 2.1 to 6.1 cm wide. They are ovate to broadly ovate, the tip is pointed, the base sloping, wedge-shaped to almost heart-shaped and the leaf margin is entire, wavy or toothed with coarse teeth up to 5 mm long.

blossoms

The flowers are solitary, the buds are covered with curly hair, ovoid-pointed and 0.6 to 1 cm long. The flower stalk is 0.6 to 1.5 cm long at flowering time. The calyx is 0.9 to 1.5 cm long and measures 5 to 6.5 mm in diameter at the base of the calyx lobes. The calyx lobes are lanceolate, pointed to narrowly pointed, 5.5 to 9 mm long and balding. The yellow crown is marked with five spots up to 7 mm long, each spot is composed of several smaller spots, only rarely is it a large, coherent spot. The length of the crown is 1 to 1.7 cm, its diameter 1.5 to 2.2 cm. It is bell-shaped-wheel-shaped or bent back. The petals are hairy around the attachment points of the stamens .

The stamens are colored purple, the anthers are 3 to 4 mm long, initially colored purple, but dry to blue, the connective between the counters is yellow. The stylus is up to 9 mm long and has a split scar .

Fruits and seeds

The flower stalk on the fruit extends to 0.8 to 1.4 cm. The cup enlarges to 3 to 4.2 cm in length and 1.3 to 2 cm in width, its cross-section is pentagonal. The calyx lobes are 0.8 to 1.2 cm long on the fruit, narrowly triangular to pointed, sometimes even almost thread-shaped and then looping around each other. The fruit is a green berry with a diameter of 1.1 cm. It contains a large number of pale yellow, kidney-shaped seeds with a finely pitted surface and a size of around 2.1 by 1.6 mm.

Distribution and locations

The species is only known from the Mexican state of Jalisco , where it grows in the Sierra de Manantlán at altitudes around 2100 m. There it is mainly found on slopes, open plains and along paths in the cloud forest , in pine-oak forests and near water basins.

etymology

The species epitheton longiloba refers to the long calyx lobes of the calyx.
