Phytocoris longipennis is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 6.6 to 7.6 millimeters long. The species of the genus Phytocoris can be recognized by their long thighs ( femora ) of the hind legs and the long first antennae . Only Miridius quadrivirgatus also has these characteristics. In Phytocoris longipennis the black color on the pronotum is not sharply demarcated and the top of the body is irregularly spotted black and brown. The pale bandages on the rails ( tibia ) of the middle legs are wider than the dark bandages. Both the males and the females are fully winged (macropter).

Occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread in Europe, with the exception of the Mediterranean area, where it occurs only in the mountains in the northern edge, east to Siberia, China and Japan. In Germany and Austria it is widespread and not uncommon, in some places also often. Above all, humid habitats and riparian forests are populated.

Way of life

The bugs live zoophytophagous on various deciduous trees, such as hazel ( Corylus ), oak ( Quercus ), ash ( Fraxinus ), willow ( Salix ), hawthorn ( Crataegus ), alder ( Alnus ), pear ( Pyrus ), apples ( Malus ) or Poplars ( Populus ). During the day, the bugs sit on the bark of the trunk, but also on thinner branches higher up on the host plants. The adult bedbugs can be observed from late June to October, especially in July and August.
