Picacho is a song by the American rapper Young Thug from 2013, which he recorded with the musician Maceo . It is included on his mixtape 1017 Thug and was written by the artists themselves and produced by Jay Neutron .

Music and lyrics

Picacho is a Southern hip-hop -Song whose beat is besides the genre typical 808 - bass drums , hi-hats , snares and claps mainly through a simple, catchy synthesizer distinguished motif, which is continuously played throughout the song. Young Thug raps the first and third verses and performs the chorus, which is sung to some extent ; Maceo takes over the rap in the second verse. The performance of the main artist changes continuously in volume and tone of voice, that of the guest musician sounds more conventional and uniform in comparison. When the last hook is finished, the song stops abruptly, as it flows seamlessly into the next track on the mixtape. In the text, the two rappers brag about their lifestyle , which consists of a pronounced libido , great wealth , luxury goods such as jewelry and the drug trade . Particular attention is paid to the diamonds that the artists wear and which, especially in the chorus, are a central part of several lyrical tricks . The title "Picacho" is to be understood as a play on words both with the Pokémon species Pikachu and with the homophone "peek at you" (for example, "peeping at you"): Young Thug's jewels shine as brightly as the attacks of the electric Pokémon so that they catch the viewer's eye immediately, while at the same time he is walking through a nightclub and observing people.

criticism

Although Picacho was neither a single nor a commercial success, the song was particularly popular with the American music press and was the song that ushered in the critical breakthrough of the then aspiring artist. It has been highlighted as a standout title in several texts for 1017 Thug , the mixtape from which it comes, and is considered to be one of the greatest pieces of music that Young Thug released. Spin , Pitchfork and Rolling Stone each named the song one of the best of 2013. Various critics described Picacho in a positive way as bizarre and eccentric. The musician's rap style and vocal performance would be so unpredictable and insane that other genre representatives like Future (with whom he later recorded a collaboration album) would appear normal by comparison. It was praised how much Young Thug gets out of the premise of the song, so that he combines idiosyncratic puns , original metaphors and memorable melodies . Jay Neutron's playful production was also praised. Some reviewers saw Young Thug as a promising successor to the rapper Lil Wayne , who gained a lot of critical praise in the 2000s due to his refreshing manner, but was rated increasingly poorly at the time of Picacho's publication .
