Picea meyeri is a species fromthe pine family (Pinaceae). It isnative tonorthern China .

description

Picea meyeri grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 30 meters and diameters of up to 60 centimeters at chest height . The crown is conical. The gray-brown bark flakes off in irregularly shaped plates. The hairy or hairless bark of the branches is yellow-brown in color.

The slightly resinous, brown winter buds are conical to conical-egg-shaped. The slightly curved needles are 1.3 to 3 centimeters long and about 0.2 centimeters wide and are linear-square in shape. Its tip is blunt or almost pointed, but not piercing. One finds stomatal lines on all sides of the needle .

Picea meyeri is single-sexed ( monoecious ) and the flowering time is in April. The cones are elongated-cylindrical in shape with a length of 6 to 9 centimeters and a thickness of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. They are initially green and turn yellow-brown when they are ripe from September to October. The seed scales are obovate and about 1.6 inches long and about 1.2 inches wide. The obovate seeds are about 3.5 millimeters long and have wings that are about 10 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Picea meyeri is in northern China. It includes Wutai Shan , located in Shanxi Province , as well as Hebei , Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia provinces . It is questionable whether there are also deposits in southern Gansu .

Picea meyeri thrives at altitudes from 1600 to 2700 meters.

Picea meyeri is classified as "not endangered" in the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary.

use

The wood from Picea meyeri is used as construction wood , in bridge and furniture construction as well as for the production of masts and pulp . The species is also planted as an ornamental wood and for reforestation.

Systematics

Picea meyeri is assigned to the subgenus Picea , the section Picea , the subsection Picea and the series Asperatae within the genus of the spruce trees ( Picea ) .

It was first described as Picea meyeri in 1914 by Alfred Rehder and Ernest Henry Wilson in Plantae Wilsonianae an enumeration of the woody plants collected in Western China for the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University during the years 1907, 1908 and 1910 by EH Wilson edited by Charles Sprague Sargent ... , Volume 2 (1), pages 28-29. Synonyms for Picea meyeri Rehder & EH Wilson are Picea mongolica (HQ Wu) WD Xu and Picea meyeri subsp. mongolica (HQWu) Silba .
