At 4,978 meters, Pico Bolívar is the highest mountain in Venezuela . It is named after the national hero of Venezuela, Simón Bolívar . The mountain is located in the northeastern foothills of the Andes range not far from the city of Mérida , the capital of the state of the same name in the Parque nacional Sierra Nevada National Park .

With the cable car ( Teleférico ) starting in Mérida you could go up to the Pico Espejo at an altitude of 4,765 meters and from there you had a direct view of the Pico Bolívar. The cable car, which consisted of four sections and was put into full-length operation in 1960, was the longest and highest cable car in the world until it was closed in 2008. In 2016, a new system was put into operation on the same route.

The first ascent was made either in 1935 by Enrique Bourgoin, H. Márquez Molina and Domingo Peña or a year later, on February 3, 1936, by German mountaineers. The ascent in 1935 is controversial.

At the same time, five double frequency GPS receivers were used.
