Professional background

He then moved to the École polytechnique (1989–1997) as Maître des conférences in 1989, while at the same time he worked as a research officer at the CNRS , which promoted him to research director in 1991. In 1992 he accepted a position as professor of economics at ENSAE .

Following a personal recommendation by Gary Becker , the University of Chicago recruited Chiappori from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1997 and gave him a professorship in economics. After a visiting professorship at Columbia University in 2004/05, Chiappori finally accepted a call to this university and in 2005 took over the E. research

According to the economic publications database IDEAS , Chiappori is one of the 1% of the most research-intensive economists (rank 205) in the overall ranking. In terms of criteria such as “number of papers” or “number of citations”, Chiappori is clearly one of the top 5% of the economists recorded in the database. The most cited article by Chiapporis is entitled " Rational Household Labor Supply " (1988). In this article, Chiappori examines the job supply of households. To do this, he models households as a two-person collective that makes Pareto-efficient decisions. The consequences of this assumption are examined in a three-goods model in which total consumption and the labor supply of each household member can be observed. If the agents are assumed to be selfish, refutable conditions for the household's job supply can be derived from both a parametric and a non-parametric perspective. On the other hand, if the agents are assumed to be altruistic, constraints remain in the nonparametric context; a useful interpretation results from the comparison with the characterization of aggregated demand for a private economy.
