Pierre-Charles Canot

Pierre-Charles Canot (* 1710 in Paris ; † 1777 in London ) was a French draftsman and engraver of the Rococo , which from 1740 in England worked and was known for its maritime representations, genre scenes and landscapes.

Life

Pierre-Charles Canot was born in Paris in 1710, according to another source near Paris in 1712. He was the older brother of the draftsman and decorator Philippe Canot . Pierre-Charles Canot completed an apprenticeship as a copper engraver in Paris and moved to London in 1740 , where he ran a workshop at 115 Fleet Street in the Strand. In 1770 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts . In 1777 he died in Kentish Town , now part of London.

Pierre-Charles Canot works after 17th century Dutch masters and contemporary artists. The painting Pyramus and Thisbe by Leonaert Bramer is only preserved in the illustration Canots. Pierre-Charles Canot is considered one of the outstanding engravers in England in the 18th century. According to Charles Blanc , Canots' legacy includes more than 175 engravings. Christopher Norton (1738–1799) was Canot's pupil from 1755.
