Pierre Amandry

Pierre Amandry (born December 31, 1912 in Troyes , Département Aube , † February 21, 2006 in Paris ) was a French classical archaeologist .

Life

After attending school and the preparatory period, he was admitted to the École normal supérieure in Paris in 1933 , where he studied Classical Studies . After completing his studies, he became an employee of the École Française d'Archéologie d'Athènes in 1937 , of which he was general secretary between 1941 and 1948. During this time he found among other things a gold and ivory treasure during excavations in Delphi .

Following his work as General Secretary of the École Française d'Archéologie d'Athènes, he wrote his habilitation thesis entitled La mantique apollinienne à Delphes. Essai sur le fonctionnement de l'oracle (1950) and in this dismantled the romantic image of the questioning of Pythia at the oracle of Delphi in favor of a functionally prosaic oracle . He then became professor of archeology at the University of Strasbourg in 1951 and taught there until 1969.

From 1969 to 1981 he was director of the École Française d'Athènes. During this time he became a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1972 as the successor to Eugène Tisserant . In 1978 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .

He has been honored several times for his services, including becoming an officer of the Legion of Honor and commander of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques . He was also an officer of the Order of George I and the Belgian Order of the Crown .

His son is the numismatist Michel Amandry .

Publications

In addition to his many years of teaching and research, he has also written numerous books and articles in specialist journals dealing with the structures and temples found during the excavations in Delphi. His major publications include:

In addition , he translated Ο Χριστός ξανασταυρώνεται by Nikos Kazantzakis into the French language with the title Christ recrucifié (1955).
