Pierre Cécile Puvis de Chavannes (born December 14, 1824 in Lyon / Rhône , † October 24, 1898 in Paris ) was a French painter . Today his work is generally assigned to symbolism , but this must appear questionable in view of the establishment of this art movement by a significantly younger generation. He is the author of numerous easel paintings and at the same time the creator of extensive wall paintings for public buildings.

Life

Pierre Puvis de Chavanne came from a middle- class family and enjoyed a solid classical education before he - attracted by painting - undertook his first trip to Italy and visited Henry Scheffer's studio in Paris for a year . He only discovered his true calling on the occasion of his second trip to Italy , accompanied by Louis Bauderon de Vermeron (1809–1870). He owed his meeting with Eugène Delacroix to him, who accepted him as a student for a few weeks shortly before his studio was closed. He then studied with Thomas Couture for several months .

In 1852 he set up his own studio on Place Pigalle , which he used throughout his life. He worked there, based on the model, among his friends, including the painters Alexandre Bida (1813–1895) and Louis-Gustave Ricard (1823–1873) as well as the engraver Victor Florence Pollet (1811–1882). Eugen Napoleon of Sweden studied with him from 1887 to 1889 .

The jury of the Paris Salon rejected the persistent painter for eight years before he finally achieved his breakthrough in 1861 with the Concordia and the Bellum , but ultimately in 1881 with his work Le pauvre pêcheur . However, it was not until 1887 that Pierre Puvis de Chavanne became known through the acquisition of this work by the French government for the Museum de Luxembourg (now on display in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris ).

The intimate relationship with his model, the later painter Suzanne Valadon, said to Puvis de Chavannes, is not clearly proven .

Deeply affected by the death of his long-time girlfriend and muse Marie Cantacuzène two months earlier, whom he met in 1856 but only married in 1897, Pierre Puvis de Chavanne died in 1898 at the age of 73. It rests in the old cemetery of Neuilly-sur-Seine .

His wall paintings attracted attention, some of which can be seen in the town halls of Paris and Poitiers , the Auditorium Maximum of the Sorbonne University and the Paris Panthéon, and in the USA at the Boston Public Library . His paintings can be found in many European and American galleries.
