Pierre Duprey

Pierre François Marie Joseph Duprey MAfr (born November 16, 1922 in Croix , France , † May 13, 2007 in Rome ) was a Roman Catholic religious priest , theologian and curia bishop . He was a longtime secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity .

Life

Pierre Duprey entered the order of the Society of Missionaries of Africa ("White Fathers") in Algiers during the Second World War in 1942 as a novice . In 1950 he received in Carthage , Tunisia , the ordination . After completing his doctorate with a focus on the Christian Orient at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome , he studied Orthodox theology in Athens and Arabic in Beirut . From 1946 to 1963 he taught as a professor of dogmatics and church history at the Melkite Seminary of St. Ann of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Jerusalem .

In 1963, Pierre Duprey was appointed Undersecretary of the then "Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity". The Secretariat was founded on June 5, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. brought to life; The director was the German Cardinal Augustin Bea . In 1983 Duprey was appointed secretary. In 1988/1989 Pope John Paul II changed the name of the Unity Secretariat to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

He was also vice chairman of the Pontifical Commission for the religious relationship to the Jewish faith ( "The Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews"), from 1965 he was a member of the World Council of Churches ( "World Council of Churches' (WCC)) , from 1971 to 1983 of a working group of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity and WCC “Faith and Order” commission of the WCC and member of the “Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission” (ARCIC). He was also involved in relations with the Lutheran World Federation , the Reformed World Federation and the Pentecostal movement . In 1980 he became secretary of the international commission for dialogue of the Orthodox-Roman-Catholic Church. In 1963 he founded the Catholic Committee for Cultural Cooperation with the Orthodox and Oriental Churches. He was also a board member of the Tantur Ecumenical Institute for Theological Studies in Jerusalem.

Pierre Duprey was named titular bishop of Thibaris in 1989 and was ordained episcopal in 1990 . Until his age-related resignation in 1999, he was bishop of the aforementioned dicastery (State Secretariat of the Curia). Pierre Duprey was succeeded as Secretary of the Council by the then Bishop Walter Kasper .

Act

Conference in Rhodes ; the conference brought together 61 representatives from 12 independent Orthodox churches. In 1962 he received an invitation to assist the Orthodox delegation at the first session of the Second Vatican Council as theologian and interpreter .

He played a central role in the preparation of the historic meeting between Pope Paul VI. and the Patriarch of Constantinople Athinagoras and in lifting the mutual excommunication between Rome and the Orthodox Church. He was also instrumental in the preparatory work for the start of the theological dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches, announced by Pope John Paul II during his visit to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Demetrios I , in 1979.

Duprey had been an honorary member of the board of trustees of the Pro Oriente Foundation in Vienna since 1970 .
