Pierre Vidal , often addressed in Catalan as Pere Vidal , (born March 21, 1848 in Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet , † March 21, 1929 in Perpignan ) was a historian, librarian and bibliographer from northern French Catalonia . His main field of work was the history and culture of Roussillon . He also examined the Catalan history and culture of this region.

life and work

Vidal studied in Carcassonne and Paris . In 1876 he became sub-librarian and in 1880 librarian in Perpignan.

Vidal specialized in the history of Roussillon, especially its history during the French Revolution . He published, among other things, the Histoire de la Révolution Française dans le département des Pyrénées Orientales (1885–1889, The history of the French Revolution in the department of Pyrénées Orientales), L'an 93 en Roussillon (1897, The year 1793 in Roussillon), Documents sur la langue catalane des ancients comtés de Roussillon et de Cerdagne (1311-1380) (1928, documents on the Catalan language in the old counties of Roussillon and Cerdagne). The most important works by Vidal are the Histoire de la ville de Perpignan depuis les origines jusqu'au traité des Pyrénées (1897, History of the city of Perpignan from the beginnings to the Peace of the Pyrenees ) and the Histoire du Roussillon (1923, History of Roussillon).

He was interested in the folklore of Roussillon and Catalonia. He gave the Cançoner català de Rosselló i de Cerdanya (1885–1888, Catalan songbook of Roussillon and Cerdanya), the Recueil de goigs et cantiques roussillonais (1886, collection of hymns from Roussillon) and the Goigs des ous (1888, hymns on the eggs). In 1883 he took part in the festivities in Banyuls , Elne and Perpignan in honor of Catalan writers. Several times Vidal took an active part in the Jocs Florals in Barcelona .

He also published an incunabula catalog of the Perpignan City Library (1897) and, together with Joseph Calmette, a bibliography of Roussillon (1906).
