Pieter Franciscus Dierckx (born February 7, 1871 in Antwerp , † September 4, 1950 there ) was a Belgian painter .

Life

Pieter Dierckx studied at the Antwerp Art Academy ( Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten ) and the affiliated university ( Hoger Instituut ) with Juliaan De Vriendt and his brother Albert De Vriendt and Karel Verlat, among others .

Dierckx was a member of the artist group "Die Skalden" (De Scalden).

In September 1896 he was appointed director of the Art Academy in Temse , where he was also responsible for drawing lessons. In the 230-year history of the Temsen Art Academy, Pieter Dierckx is considered one of the most important directors.

As an etcher and as a graphic designer, he helped a variety of clubs with posters, letterheads, etc. In 1899, he illustrated the "students Songbook" ( Studentenliederboek ) of Karel Heyndrickx and 1910 some children's stories of the writer Lodewijk Scheltjens (1861-1946). On the occasion of Gerhard Mercator's 400th birthday in 1912, he worked on the design of the historical parade in Rupelmonde .

During the First World War he dedicated many paintings to rural life in Temse, including: "Potato peeler in the old people's home" (Aardappelschillers in het Ouderlingengesticht), "The barren meal" (Het sober Maal), "Soup kitchen" (De Soepbedeling), "Schilfernte" ( Het Plekplein), "The lace maker" (De Kantwerkster), "The wooden shoemaker" (De Klompenmaker), "The basket weaver" (De Mandenvlecht), "The small quay" (De kleine Kaai) (1917), "The burned yard" (Hetebrande Hof), "The railway attendant" (De Baanwachtster), "The weaver's family" (Het Huisgezin van de Wever), "The spinning wheel" (Het Spinnewiel), "The fear of God on the heath" (Godvrucht op de Heide) and other.

Another large part of his artistic work consists of landscape paintings, especially forests. Dierckx belonged to the school of Neo-Impressionism , so light plays an important role in his paintings.

Dierckx was also drawn to history painting and followed the school of Hendrik Leys . On the recommendation of Franz Courtens, who valued Dierckx as an artist, he received an important commission from the city of Lokeren for two historical panel paintings in the town hall there. On a picture board you can see Emperor Charles V handing over the certificate for the weekly market to the deputies of the city of Lokeren in 1555. The other panel shows the regent couple Albrecht VII of Austria and Isabella of Spain when they founded the Saint Sebastian guild in 1613 and handed over the certificate for the fair. These are large paintings that confirm Pieter Dierckx's mastery in the representation of historical motifs and thus also the fame of the Leys school.

In March 1919 Dierckx returned to Antwerp and opened a painting workshop there. With the painting "Sankt Willibrord proclaims the Gospel to the inhabitants of the Scheldt banks around the year 700" (Sint-Willibrordus het evangelie condensing aan de oeverbewoners der Scheldt omtrent het jaar 700) (1939) Dierckx once again proved himself to be a talented history painter. This work, almost five meters wide, hangs in the Heilig Hartkerk at Lange Beeldekensstraat 18 in Antwerp.

Dierckx also devoted himself to mythological themes with the paintings "Dance of the Sylphids at Dawn" (Dans der Sylphiden bij dageraad) and "Orpheus, the singer with the lovely voice from Thrace" (Orpheus de zoetgevooisde zanger van Tracië) (1942). With "Orpheus" he repeated the "Dance of the Sylphids" in the background.

His portraits also reveal the hand of a master.

Since 1952, a biennial "Pieter Dierckx Prize for Painting" has been presented at the Temsen Art Academy. In 1986 a street in Temse was named after Dierckx.

Pieter Dierckx belongs to the tradition of the great painters of his time, in which he deserves his own and certainly outstanding place.
