Rupel moons
Rupelmonde has been part of the municipality of Kruibeke in Flanders ( East Flanders Province ), Belgium , since 1977 . The place is located on the left bank of the Scheldt , opposite the mouth of the Rupel River , in the Waasland (Land van Waas) and in the Scheldeland Nature Park, southwest of Antwerp . Rupelmonde has 2,878 inhabitants (January 1, 2004).
history
Since the 12th century, Rupelmonde had developed into an important trading center. In 1271 Margaretha van Constantinopel granted the place tariff privileges for the Schelde and Rupel. Rupelmonde had town rights since the 14th century. In the late Middle Ages, economic decline followed after numerous wars. But the city still had some importance at the beginning of the early modern era.
The place name is linked to the battle of Phillips the Good , Duke of Burgundy against the freedom-loving citizens of Ghent through the battle of Rupelmonde in 1452 . In the battle, Phillip's son Cornelius was killed by a lance blow in his face , along with many others who had remained anonymous. He had n't worn the chin and neck protection that came with his helmet out of comfort .

On March 5, 1512, Gerhard Mercator was born in Rupelmonde, who was to become world famous as a cartographer in Duisburg .
