Pieter Post ( May 1, 1608 in Haarlem , † May 2, 1669 in The Hague ) was a Dutch architect , engineer and painter .

Life

The son of the glass painter of the same name, Pieter Post, achieved fame as an exponent of Dutch classical architecture. He spent several years studying as a young painter in Rome and, together with his brother Frans Post, took part in the expedition of Count Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen to Brazil (1637–1644), during which he developed the plan for the city of Moritzstadt, founded in 1639 (today Recife ) with fortifications, government palace and church. Back in Holland he designed well-known, now listed townhouses, country houses and weighing houses, often with a characteristic central hall with a cupola, crowned by an octagonal tower. Like many architects of his time, he also designed interiors. In 1648 he received an official position in The Hague.

On behalf of Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen, Pieter Post had the Schwanenburg , the symbol of the city of Kleve , converted into a simple Dutch baroque palace between 1663 and 1666. Pieter Post designed the Haus Freudenberg headquarters and the Prinzenhof, the personal residence of Johann Moritz, as new buildings in Kleve, both of which were destroyed by Allied air raids in World War II and never rebuilt.

Although Pieter Post was primarily successful as an architect, he began as a trained painter who, like his brother Frans Post, painted landscapes and battle scenes. Of those painters who are counted in the Van de Velde School , Pieter Post was certainly the most individual.

After his death in 1669, his son Maurits Post took over his projects.
