Pieter de Molijn

Pieter de Molijn , also de Molyn, (born April 6, 1595 in London , † March 23, 1661 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch landscape painter. Together with Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael , who also worked in Haarlem, he is considered the main representative of tonal landscape painting.

Life

Pieter de Molijn was baptized in London as a member of the Dutch Reformed Congregation in Austin Friars. It is possible that he was in Italy for some time in his youth and was a student of Esaias van de Velde . In 1616 he can be traced back to Haarlem as a member of the St. Luke's Guild of Painters. From 1616 to 1627 he lived in Delft and then again in Haarlem.

His picture Dunes from 1626 is considered to be one of the earliest works of the Haarlem School of tonal landscape painting with a monochrome palette. As a painter, he devoted himself to a wide variety of subjects. In addition to landscape paintings, portraits, genre paintings , marine paintings , architectural paintings .

His students include Gerard ter Borch , Jan Coelenbier (1610–1680), Anthony Molijn , Allart van Everdingen .

He had a son Pieter (1637–1701) who went to Rome and was a member of the circle of Dutch-Flemish painters Bentvueghels there. He was known there as Peter Tempesta and mainly painted hunting scenes. He was later imprisoned in Genoa for sixteen years for killing his wife. He was released during the French siege in 1684 and went to Parma.
