Pietrafitta is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of Piegaro in the province of Perugia , Umbria region in Italy .

geography

The place is located 10 km east of the capital Piegaro and 20 km southwest of the provincial and regional capital Perugia . The place is at 276  m slm and in 2001 had about 740 inhabitants. In 2011 there were about 785 inhabitants. It is the largest district of the Piegaro municipality and has almost the same number of inhabitants as the main town. The lake Lago Trasimeno is about 12 km north, the lake Lago di Pietrafitta is located just north of the village. The municipality of Perugia begins in the northeast, and the municipality of Marsciano lies to the east and southeast. The place is on the Nestore River.

history

The place arose in the middle of the 12th century as a settlement of servants who worked for the abbey. The fortification walls with the Torre d'angolo tower were built in 1340. In 1403 the council of Perugia ordered the partial dismantling of the fortifications of the abbey and those of Pietrafitta in order to give them no protection in the event of an enemy conquest. After the Italian campaign of Napoleon Bonaparte , the place belonged to the Trasimène department (Canton Panicale ). After the end of the French occupation Pietrafitta was in the Papal States , first autonomous community ( appodiato ) of Piegaro and with the unification of Italy hamlet of Piegaro.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta
  • Abbazia dei Sette Frati (also San Benedetto di Pietrafitta), former abbey just outside the village. The name of the abbey is derived from the seven sons of Felicitas (Italian: Sette Frati = seven brothers). First mentioned in a document from Pope Innocent II in 1136 . Around 1560, Galeazzo Alessi made changes to the building. Contains the fresco Vergine ei Sette Fratelli martiri by Girolamo Danti (1547–1580).
  • Castello di Pietrafitta , castle, of which only parts of the buildings remain.
  • Santa Maria Assunta , church in the center, which was built as Santa Maria del Piano in the 15th century. The current church was built between 1866 and 1670 by Lorenzo Valiani. The campanile is separated from the church and is located in an old defense tower of the former castle.
  • Madonna del Fosso , chapel near the town center, which was built in 1548. Was renovated in 1925, only the wall of the altar remained in its original state. This contains the fresco Madonna con Bambino tra San Sebastiano e San Rocco attributed to Tiberio d'Assisi (Tiberio Ranieri di Diotallevi, approx. 1470–1524) .
  • Museo Paleontologico Luigi Boldrini , Paleontological Museum .
  • Lago di Pietrafitta , artificial lake created in 2000 by the Enel energy company .
