Pietro Giovanni Abbati († after 1733 ) was an Italian prospectus, decoration and stage painter and copperplate engraver from Parma , who can be traced back to 1683-1733.

Life

Pietro Giovanni Abbati was a son of Bernardo Abbati and was born in Parma in the second half of the 17th century. He received his education in the Dominican monastery of San Pietro Martire in Parma. The friars noticed Abbati's artistic talent and therefore had him trained by Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena . He was just as versatile as his teacher as a party decorator, architect and painter.

Abbati is first documented on August 25, 1683, where he is listed as a witness. Apparently, the ducal court of Parma valued Abbati's artistic skills, having provided him with a letter of recommendation for a stay in Venice in 1706 . Abbati's two publications of stage sets and brochures based on designs by his teacher Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena, including Varie opere di prospettiva inventate da F. Galli raccolte di Pietro Abbati e intagliate da Carlo Antonio Buffagnotti (Bologna 1707) , also fall during this period .

In 1713 Abbati became subprior of the Turin Guild of Saint Luke . In the following year he designed the theater sets for the new ducal theater in Parma on the occasion of the there performance of Giuseppe Maria Orlandini's opera Carlo, Re di Alemagna . On that occasion he was referred to as the trusted servant of the Duke of Parma. He remained a court artist of the Farnese and from November 1718 received a fixed monthly income of 73 lire. In 1727, however, this salary was not paid to him. According to a receipt, he received 1,500 lire in January 1733 for purchasing the costumes for a horse dance performance in honor of the duke.

Abbati worked as a stage painter not only in Parma, but also in Urbania , Turin, Bologna and Vienna . He also created paintings and etchings. In Parma he gave Giuseppe Pellizzoli and Agostino Filippi lessons in jump-off.
