Pietro Supino

Pietro Paolo Supino (born November 10, 1965 in Milan ) is a Swiss lawyer and publisher . He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the TX Group (formerly Tamedia), one of the largest Swiss media companies.

Life

As the grandson of the art collector Werner Coninx and son of his daughter Rena Coninx, Supino belongs to the publishing family, which still holds the majority of Tamedia AG and is the fifth generation to run the company. His father Ugo Supino, interned in Switzerland as a member of the Italian resistance during World War II , was a director at Pirelli and Alfa Romeo . At the age of six, his parents separated and Supino moved to Zurich with his mother and sister .

Supino studied law and economics at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and at the London School of Economics . In 1994 he wrote his dissertation on the subject of legal structuring with trust from a Swiss perspective . He is admitted to the Zurich bar and holds a Master of Laws .

Supino is a Swiss- Italian citizen . He is married, has two children and lives in Zurich.

Practice as a lawyer

Supino worked as a lawyer for the law firm Bär & Karrer in Zurich and as a management consultant for the management consultancy McKinsey & Company in Zurich. He was also a founding partner of the Family Office Private Client Partners in Zurich. Supino's work at Bär & Karrer came under fire because in 1998 he was involved in the establishment of a “dubious” offshore company called the “Moonstone Trust”. The allegations turned out to be unfounded, and the investigations against the then client of Bär & Karrer were closed due to a lack of suspicion.

Worked at Tamedia

In 1991, Supino became a member of the Tamedia board of directors, its vice-chairman in 2002 and finally - as successor to Hans Heinrich Coninx - its chairman. Under his leadership, Tamedia developed into the largest private media company in Switzerland in 2014 with the takeover of Espace Media Groupe in 2007, Edipresse's Swiss media business between 2009 and 2011 and Ziegler Druck- und Verlags-AG . Prior to assuming the presidency of Tamedia's board of directors, he attended Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York.

Further commitment

Pietro Supino has been President of the Swiss Media Association since September 22, 2016. Supino has been a member of the Board of Visitors of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York since 2012 and was a member of the international advisory board of the Italian media company RCS MediaGroup from 2013 to 2015 . Supino is also a member of the board of the Family Business Network Switzerland and a member of the board of trustees of the foundation for constructive, concrete and conceptual art in Zurich, which runs the Museum Haus Konstruktiv . From 2010 to 2017 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Dispatch Agency (sda).

Supino is considered to be the driving force behind the construction of the new Tamedia media house in Zurich, which was built from 2011 to 2013 based on a design by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban .

On September 30, 2014, Supino appeared as a keynote speaker at the annual congress of the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers . He called on the publishers present to shape their own future and to see the technical possibilities as an opportunity. According to Supino, the media need "more engineers and IT specialists and fewer teachers."

Supino attended the Bilderberg Conference in 2012 and 2019 . In April 2020, Supino was elected to the Board of Directors of Gruppo Editoriale (GEDI), the leading Italian media group and publisher of the daily newspapers La “La Repubblica”, “La Stampa” and “Il Secolo XIX”.
