Piia Korhonen (born January 12, 1997 in Eura ) is a Finnish volleyball player who plays in the position of diagonal attacker.
Career
society
Piia Korhonen started playing volleyball in her hometown of Eura with Euran Raiku . The diagonal attacker started her professional career in 2013 at LiigaEura before moving to the Finnish first division club HPK Naiset in 2014 . There she was top scorer of her team in the CEV Cup in her first season (2014/15) . In the 2015/16 season, Korhonen and the team from Hämeenlinna became Finnish champions and reached the final of the Finnish Cup. This also succeeded in the 2016/17 season. With 75 points (5.36 points / set) she also reached 10th place in the scorer ranking of the main round of the CEV Cup this season.
In mid-May 2017, the German volleyball Bundesliga club Dresdner SC announced the commitment of Piia Korhonen. She signed a two-year contract in Dresden until 2019. In her first season, Korhonen won the cup with the Dresden club and made it to the playoff semifinals . The following season ended with elimination in the cup and Bundesliga playoff round of 16, which ended rather disappointingly. In the 2019/20 season, the Dresden club won the cup again , before the current season was declared over by the German Volleyball Bundesliga on March 12, 2020, before the last match day of the main round due to the global COVID-19 pandemic . At the end of April, Dresdner SC announced that the expiring contract with Korhonen would not be extended. She then moved to the Italian second division Geovillage Hermaea Olbia .
National team
Piia Korhonen has been part of the Finnish national team since 2014. With the team she took part in the qualification for the European volleyball championship 2017 and attracted attention as the top scorer in the main qualifying round . The qualification was ultimately missed. In spring 2017 she was appointed to the squad for the 2017 European Volleyball League and the 2017 Summer Universiade ( world sports games for students ) in Taipei .
