Career

Piotr Gutman started boxing as a teenager at WKS Gornik Biskupice with coach Jan Krautwurst. He learned the trade of a technician. He was southpaw and was already in 1959 at the age of 18 for the first time Polish champion in the bantamweight seniors (up to 54 kg body weight). He was able to hold this weight class until 1960. In 1961 he switched to featherweight (up to 57 kg body weight). As early as 1959 he was accepted into the Polish national team of amateur boxers and came into the hands of the legendary Polish national coach Feliks Stamm, who formed him into a boxer who stood on the threshold of world class.

Piotr Gutman later also started for the LTS Łabędy club . In Poland he fought in his weight classes primarily with Brunon Bendig and Jerzy Adamski for supremacy.

In 1960 he was absent from the Polish championship due to injury and so had no opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rome . In 1961 he suffered a tech at the Polish featherweight championship. Knockout loss in the 3rd round against Jaroslaw Kulesza. He was nominated by Feliks Stamm for the European championship this year in Belgrade for the bantamweight and prepared specifically for this championship. In Belgrade he then showed excellent performances and defeated Eddy Treacy from Ireland , Peter Bennyworth from England and Niculae Puiu from Romania on points. In the final, however, he was defeated by the Soviet champion Sergei Siwko on points and thus took 2nd place at this European championship.

In 1962 Piotr Gutman won international battles against the FRG in Würzburg over Otto Schröck from Schweinfurt through techn. KO in the 2nd round and in Berlin (East) he also defeated the GDR champion Wolfgang Huebner, who got by against him and only lost on points.

In 1963 Piotr Gutman won his second Polish championship title. In the final fight of the featherweight he defeated Jozef Drucis on points. at the European Championships this year he was not used.

1964 Piotr Gutman lost in the Polish championship in the final battle against Jerzy Adamski on points, but was still used at the Olympic Games in Tokyo . The decisive factor for this was probably his point victory over the Russian master Stanislaw Stepanowitsch Stepaschkin in an international match against the Soviet Union in Moscow . In Tokyo he narrowly missed a medal, because he lost after victories over Patrick Fitzsimmons from Ireland and Masatake Takyama from Japan in the quarter-finals against the largely unknown Anthony Villanueva from the Philippines and only came in 5th place.

In 1965 he lost in Glasgow in an international match against Scotland against the Scottish Ken Buchanan, who later became a professional boxer, on points. In 1966, Piotr Gutman won his third and last Polish championship title with a non-fighting victory in the featherweight final over the injured Henryk Mielczewski. In 1966 he started at the championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact states in Budapest and suffered a knockout defeat in the first round in the final against Stanislaw Stepaschkin, who became Olympic champion in 1964 .

In 1967 he ended his career as an active boxer and became a coach. He trained u. a. the associations AWF Wrocław , LTS Labedy , Gornik Knurow and Walce Zabrze . He had contested 218 fights, of which he won 196. He fought twice and lost 20 fights.
