Jerzy Adamski (born March 14, 1937 in Sierpc , † December 6, 2002 in Bydgoszcz ) was a Polish featherweight boxer . He won a silver medal at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and was European champion in Lucerne in 1959 .

Career

Jerzy Adamsky, nicknamed “Jopek”, started boxing as a teenager at the Polonia Piła sports club . His first trainer was Karl Nadskakula. He later moved to Brda Bydgoszcz and to Start Bydgoszcz and Astoria Bydgoszcz . The then Polish national coach Feliks Stamm formed him into a world class boxer in the Polish national team from 1956.

Jerzy Adamski initially started in the bantamweight division, but soon switched to the featherweight division and, with a height of 1.71 meters, had very good qualifications. He was an excellent technician who could hit perfect right-left combinations. He also had very good footwork, was skillful and strong.

Jerzy Adamski was a locksmith and mechanic and worked for the Polish railways.

In 1956 he was the first Polish bantamweight champion. In 1957 he was used at the European Bantamweight Championships in Prague . He won there in his first fight over Pal Fekete from Hungary on points, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals by a point defeat against Gianfranco Piovesani from Italy . He came in 5th place in the final accounts together with the three other losers from the quarter-finals.

1959 Jerzy Adamski became Polish featherweight champion. He won this title in 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1964. At the European Championships in 1959 in Lucerne he started in featherweight and defeated Kalman Dubovszky, Hungary , by disqualification in the 2nd round and Sandro Lopopolo from Italy and Andre Juncker from France on points . In the final battle he defeated Peter Goschka from Hamburg with 4: 1 judges' votes on points and thus became European champion .

A year later he started at the Olympic Games in Rome in the featherweight division. Well prepared by Felik's line, he won there on points over Sumith Mohandas Liyanage from Ceylon , Shinetsu Suzuki from Japan , Ernst Chervet from Switzerland and William Meyers from South Africa . In the final he faced Francesco Musso from Italy . The Italian boxers had prepared intensively for the boxing tournament in Rome. This was also felt by Jerzy Adamski, because Musso defeated him on points. The silver medal remained for Jerzy Adamski , which was undoubtedly a great success for him.

At the European Championships in Belgrade in 1961 , Jerzy Adamski was not used. But he was once again at the start of the 1963 European Championship in Moscow . In Moscow he only needed one fight in which he defeated Paul Budde from the FRG on points to get to the semifinals, in which he was defeated by the Soviet athlete Stanislaw Stepanowitsch Stepaschkin in the 3rd round by technical knockout. At the end of his international career, he won another European Championship bronze medal .

In 1965 he finally resigned from boxing. He had contested 270 fights, with 237 wins, 10 draws and 23 losses.
