Piotr Lebiedziński (* 1860 in Sokółka ; † January 30, 1934 in Warsaw ) was a Polish chemist, photographer and inventor.

Life

Lebiedziński grew up in the Podlaskie region of Poland before moving to Saint Petersburg as a young man . There he completed a degree in chemistry at the polytechnic university . However, he began to be interested in photography at an early age .

After returning to Poland, he managed to organize several exhibitions of his own photographic works . As an active member of the then Polish Society of Photography Lovers (Polish Polskie Towarzystwo Miłośników Fotografii ), however, he was primarily active as a journalist and also promoted the technical and photochemical development of photography. Because of his commitment, he is considered to be the most important pioneer of modern Polish photo technology alongside inventors such as Marian Dziatkiewicz, Jerzy Franaszek, Mikołaj Iliński and Witold Romer .

In 1888 he founded the first Polish factory for photo paper . During this phase he constructed cameras and cinematographs that he had developed himself from 1893 onwards . In 1896 he opened another factory in Warsaw for the production of light-sensitive recording media and modern cameras in the 9 × 12 format, which he steadily developed between 1900 and 1904. As early as 1895 Lebiedziński had developed his own film camera and projector that could take 14 pictures per second.

After numerous expansions, his company was given the brand name Foton in 1933 . In 1939, however, all plants were closed by the German occupiers after the outbreak of World War II .
