Piplantri ( Hindi पीपलांत्री ) is a village with about 500 inhabitants in the south of the Indian state of Rajasthan . The place is known beyond the borders of India because of a tree-planting campaign for newborn girls initiated by the mayor at the time (sarpanch) in 2006 .

location

The village of Piplantri is located about 14 km (driving distance) northwest of the city of Rajsamand and a good 70 km north of the city of Udaipur at an altitude of about 560  m .

population

The vast majority of the villagers are Hindus . The male proportion of the population only slightly exceeds the female population. One speaks Hindi or Rajasthani .

economy

The villagers live - largely self-sufficient - almost exclusively from agriculture. At the beginning of the 21st century, most of the operated in the area were marble - quarries closed.

particularities

Piplantri became famous because of a tree-planting campaign initiated in 2006 by the mayor at the time in memory of his deceased daughter. Initially, the campaign was limited to just one tree for each newborn girl, but it quickly turned into 111 trees of different species (neem, mango, amla, sheesham, etc.) In addition, the family and the village community each have a savings account with a credit balance of around 30,000 rupees invested, which is only given to the daughter when she reaches the age of 18; this should prevent child marriages . In the meantime, more than 350,000 trees have allegedly been planted and have turned the areas on the outskirts, some of which have been destroyed by marble quarries, into a green oasis . The water-storing aloe vera plants also contribute to this, as they could possibly become a future-oriented raw material for further processing in the medical or cosmetics industry.

In view of the abortion or killing of girls still practiced in large parts of rural India , which has led to a male surplus of up to 20% in some cases and thus to an increase in kidnappings, rape, etc., the path practiced in Piplantri could give new food for thought contribute.
