Pirmin Pockstaller OSB (born September 4, 1806 in Jenbach as Matthäus Pockstaller ; † April 21, 1875 in Fiecht ) was an Austrian Catholic clergyman. From 1834 until his death he was abbot of the Fiecht monastery in Tyrol .

Life

The son of a carpenter joined the Fiecht Benedictine Abbey in 1828. In 1830 he made his profession and took the religious name Pirmin. From 1830 to 1832 he studied theology in Brixen and was ordained a priest in 1832. He then worked as a cooperator in the Achental parish belonging to the monastery . In 1834, at the age of 28, he was elected abbot. Under him, the monastery experienced an enormous boom. He restored St. Georgenberg as a place of pilgrimage, stabilized the economic situation and established tourism on the Achensee , which belonged to the monastery. In 1843 the monastery school was reopened. Pockstaller rearranged the monastery archives and dealt with the history of the monastery, about which he also published several writings, but also sold several manuscripts and incunabula to the British Library in London . After a major fire in 1868 that destroyed large parts of the monastery, he had it restored until 1870. From 1861 to 1868 he was also politically active as a representative of the Tyrolean prelate class in the Austrian House of Representatives .
