The Piscataqua River is a 12 miles long estuary in the northeastern United States .
It is formed by the confluence of the Cocheco River and Salmon Falls River east of Dover . In the first third it runs south and then turns to the south-east. The confluence with the Atlantic lies east of Portsmouth . The entire length of the Piscataqua River forms the border between Maine and New Hampshire . To the south, the Piscataqua River is connected to the Great Bay , into which several rivers flow: the Lamprey River , Bellamy River and Squamscott River .
