Pyotr Andreyevich Kleinmichel ( Russian Пётр Андреевич Клейнмихель , even Peter Klein Michel ; born November 30, jul. / 11. December  1793 greg. In Estonia ; † February 3 jul. / 15. February  1869 greg. In St. Petersburg , Russian Empire ) was a Russian infantry general of the Imperial Russian Army and Minister of Transport and Public Buildings.

Life

Kleinmichel was raised in Saint Petersburg and enjoyed training in the local cadet corps. After joining the Russian army, he took part in the war against Napoleon between 1812 and 1814 , in which he was promoted to colonel. After returning to Russia, he became chief of staff of the military colonies in 1819 and major general in 1820. In 1826 he was promoted to Imperial Adjutant General. In 1839 he was raised to the rank of count and in 1841 promoted to general of the infantry . At the beginning of 1842 he became Minister of War , and at the end of the same year Kleinmichel was appointed Minister for Transport and Public Buildings, succeeding Karl Wilhelm von Toll . In October 1855 Kleinmichel, who was considered a favorite of Emperor Nicholas I, was dismissed from this office immediately after Alexander II ascended the throne and was a member of the Imperial Council , in which he hardly participated.

Between 1833 and 1839, Kleinmichel supervised the reconstruction of the Winter Palace in Petersburg, led the construction of the first stone bridge over the Neva , the construction of the New Hermitage and the construction of the Nikolai Railway .

family

Kleinmichel was a grandson of Alexei Fyodorowitsch Turchaninow . His daughter Elisabeth von Kleinmichel (1833-1896) married his adjutant, later General Nikolai Gustawowitsch Pilar von Pilchau .
