Karl Wilhelm Graf von Toll ( Russian Карл Вильгельм Фёдорович Толль , scientific transliteration Karl Vil'gel'm Fedorivič Toll ' ; * April 8th jul. / April 19,  1777 greg. In Reval ; † April 23rd jul. / 5. May  1842 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) came from the German-Baltic nobility and was general of the infantry in the Russian army .

origin

Toll came from the noble family von Toll , which spread in the Baltic States and Sweden since the 16th century . His parents were Konrad Friedrich von Toll (born March 27, 1749, † February 3, 1821) and his wife Justine Wilhelmine von Ruckteschell (born January 18, 1752).

Life

Toll received his training in the Russian Cadet Corps (1782–1796), where he came into contact with Mikhail Kutuzov , who was then director of the cadet institutions. In 1796 he joined the Imperial Russian Army , took in 1799 in the campaign of Alexander Suvorov in part, came in 1805 in the General Staff , fought at Austerlitz , then against the Turks, 1812 was Quartermaster General Kutuzov, 1813 by Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly , was On the occasion of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig, Lieutenant General , 1823 Adjutant General of the Tsar and Chief of the General Staff of the 1st Army, and in 1825 General of the Infantry.

In the Polish campaign of 1831 he again stood by General Hans Karl von Diebitsch-Sabalkanski's side as chief of staff , took over the interim command after his death and directed the operations of the last decisive one during the storming of Warsaw on October 7th after the wounding of Ivan Fyodorowitsch Paskewitsch Slaughter days. He was then appointed to the Russian Imperial Council and, in 1833, appointed chief conductor of water and road communications and public buildings. In 1834 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

In 1814 he married Caroline Olga von Strandmann (* August 12, 1796; † July 7, 1861), a daughter of the Russian general Gustav Ernst von Strandmann and Charlotte von Stackelberg . The couple had several children including:
