Planet Pop is the debut album by the international pop band ATC . It was released on November 6, 2000 on the Kingsize Records and BMG labels .

The German music producer Thomas M. Stein acted as executive producer for the album . Most of the songs were produced by Alex Christensen .

Cover design

The album cover shows the four band members Joe, Livio, Sarah and Tracey (from left to right), who sit or crouch on red chairs in red t-shirts or tops. The background is purple-black. At the upper edge of the picture are the words ATC and its written form A Touch of Class on the left and the title Planet Pop in white on the right .

Chart successes and singles

Planet Pop entered the German album charts at number 11 on November 20, 2000 and was ranked 23 and 33 in the following weeks. Overall, the album stayed in the top 100 for 23 weeks. In Austria it reached position 46, in Switzerland position 47 and in Finland position 10. Planet Pop also entered the charts at position 73 in the United States .

The first single Around the World (La La La La La) , which was released on May 22, 2000, was even more successful than the album itself and became a number-one hit in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for several weeks. The melody of the song is based on a sample of the song Pesenka by the Russian pop duo Ruki wwerch from 1998. The second release, My Heart Beats Like a Drum (Dam Dam Dam) , reached number three in Germany. The singles Thinking of You also followed (DE # 46) and Why Oh Why (DE # 16). Music videos were shot for all releases .

Sales figures and awards

The album received a gold record in Germany in the year of its release for over 150,000 sales .

The single Around the World (La La La La La) was awarded a platinum record for over 500,000 copies sold in Germany in 2000 and was awarded a gold record in Austria and Switzerland for each more than 25,000 copies sold . In addition, the group won the award in the National Dance Single of the Year category for the single at the 2001 Echo Awards . Furthermore, the release My Heart Beats Like a Drum (Dam Dam Dam) received a gold record for over 250,000 sales in Germany.

In allmusic received Planet Pop two of a possible five points. It is criticized that the album could not meet the high expectations after the hit single Around the World (La La La La La) , as most of the songs were significantly weaker. Only the songs Mind Machine and Notte D'amore con te would stand out positively.
