Pesenka ( Russian "Песенка" dt. "Song"), also known as Pesenka (La La La) known to a song by is Russian Dance - Duo Ruki vverh . It was released on February 17th, 1998 together with their third studio album Sdelai pogromche! ( "Сделай погромче!" ) Published. In 2000 the German Eurodance band ATC released an English-language cover version of the song, which became a worldwide success. Further cover versions of, among others, beFour , The Disco Boys and R3hab were also able to reach the charts in numerous countries.

background

The Russian-language song was written by Ruki-wwerch frontman Sergey Zhukov in 1998 and co-produced with Aleksey Potekhin. Zhukov said in an interview that when he created the song he was guided by the principle that "everything in life [...] plays according to certain rules". “The rule of every hit” would be “simplicity”. “These four notes”, which embodied the melody, had that “certain something” in them. After completion, however, Pesenka would have been nothing more than an “insignificant song” for those involved, on which “no one would have bet”. The song was sung by the Russian singer Elizaveta Rodnyanskaya, who has since accompanied the group to their concerts. Pesenka was released as part of her studio album Sdelai pogromche! .

In 1999, the German music publisher BMG Berlin Music approached the duo to obtain a license to publish a cover version, which they agreed to. As a result of the success of the ATC re-edition of the song, which was released under the title Around the World (La La La La La) , Ruki-wwerch was already receiving royalties of the equivalent of 738 thousand euros at the end of 2000 . They initially assumed that the payment was one zero too many. Up until 2003 they received royalties of over 1.2 million euros.

Musical and content

Pesenka is based on 4/4 time and the tempo is 132 bpm . The song is introduced by a carillon that plays the melody on which the song is based from beginning to end within two bars. The lyrics are about a song that stays in the head of anyone who hears it day and night.

"ЛМаленький секрет Хранится в этой песне
Ла-ла-ла-ла-ла
Споем мы с вами вместе
И от этих словне"

- Excerpt from Pesenka

"A little secret is hidden in this song
La, la, la, la, la
We'll sing it at the same time
And there is no hiding and no disappearing from these words"

- German translation

Cover version of ATC

On 22 May 2000, the German published Euro Dance band ATC a cover version of the song, entitled Around the World (La La La La La) ( English for " Around the World ") wore and her first single from her first studio album Planet Pop depicted. The lyrics of the original were translated into English by the German music producers Peter Könemann and Alex Christensen for the cover version and only slightly changed. Instead of the catchy tune, the newly written lyrics deal with a melody that goes around the world and stays in the head of everyone who hears it.

"Around my head it goes, a magic melody
You want to sing with me, just la, la, la, la, la
The music is the key and now the light is gone
Still it goes on and on"

- Excerpt from Around the World (La La La La La)

"In my head there is this magical melody that
you want to sing with me, just la la la la la
The music is the key and now the night is gone,
it goes on anyway"

- German translation

For the composition of the new version, Christensen took over the melody from Pesenka and mixed the song in the RNT Studios in Sweden. The publication was then taken over by BMG Berlin Musik and King Size Records . In addition to the radio version, the CD single contained an extended club mix , while the maxi single also contained other versions and the song World in Motion as the B-side. In the USA the song was released by Universal Music . In 2002 the song was released in a remixed version in Great Britain.

criticism

The US online magazine “Complex” lists Around the World (La La La La La) in its list of “10 Essential Eurodance Classics” and particularly characterizes the “catchy voice” and the use of the “la” instead of “ actual words ”as the real driving force. With the song, ATC "triggered an insane virus and thus kept dance music alive for another decade". They described the song as a "simplistic track with an undeniable chorus," which they think are exactly the two things that make Eurodance what it is.
