Plantix is an app that enables you to recognize plant diseases and pests by analyzing an image recorded by the mobile phone camera with an artificial intelligence and then making a suitable diagnosis with appropriate treatment tips. Plant lovers can exchange ideas internationally via the Plantix Community . The app remains free for users . The app is currently only available for devices with the Android operating system .

Target group and application

The app is aimed primarily at farmers , gardeners and people who grow plants. Developing countries in particular should benefit from recognizing nutrient deficiencies or pest- infested crops in good time and introducing appropriate measures. Small farmers should also be better protected against crop failures . Those interested in the industry include seed manufacturers and insurance companies . In the future, the app will become the largest database and community in the field of plant diseases and will spread more internationally. At the end of March 2017 there were around 60,000 users and today there are over a million with over 90,000 uploaded photos. The app is now represented in 150 countries and the company is planning to set up a headquarters in Pune , India , in order to expand further.

The company cooperates with ICRISAT , CIMMYT and CABI and organizations from individual countries such as India .

functionality

A special algorithm for image recognition analyzes photos of plants or individual leaves that the user has made available to the app. An artificial neural network then tries to recognize typical patterns and then assigns them to individual diseases. Using machine learning , the software tries to better classify known patterns using known data. The app already automatically records over 60 diseases. When photos are taken, GPS data is sent along with it, so that researchers can more easily see where diseases are spreading. Other big data content is also evaluated for research purposes.

development

Developed the app was 2015 from that in Hannover stationed -up companies start Peat, which by the geographer Simone Strey is passed, which at the Leibniz University research. The idea arose in Brazil when Strey was doing research on carbon in the soil and realized that the real question for farmers is how their crops are doing. The app was officially released in 2016, but a prototype called a garden bench already existed in 2014 . Today the company is based in Berlin .

criticism

The app was featured in Fortune magazine's list of 6 companies that can change the world in September 2017 .
