Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Platja de s'Estanyol ('Beach of S'Estanyol') is a small sandy beach on the north coast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the north-west of the municipality of Artà on the Badia d'Alcúdia ('Bay of Alcúdia ').

Location and description

Beach with hotel in the background

The beach is located immediately southwest of the S'Estanyol settlement at the mouth of the Barranc de sa Canova , a mostly dry stream . The brook delimits the 10.21 km² large nature area of special value (Àrea natural d'especial interès - ANAI) from Sa Canova to the northeast. The Natural Area Act (ANAI / ARIP) serves to protect the soil from construction. In the Sa Canova d'Artà area , the Urbanització Ravena , a holiday complex for more than 30,000 residents, was planned before being placed under protection , which was prevented by the campaign “La Canova contra Ravena” by environmentalists in cooperation with the Artà municipal administration. The extensive dune zone, the Marina de Sa Canova , is lined with pine and Phoenician juniper (also called Phoenician cedar). It stretches a few kilometers inland.

The Platja de s'Estanyol is 35 meters long and 50 meters wide. The beach consists of sand and gravel and is framed by flat rocks towards the water. The rear area is used for storing small boats. The beach area is free of loungers and umbrellas to be rented, as is usual on Mallorca's managed beaches. Because of its proximity to the 1500 meter long beach of S'Arenal de Sa Canova , about 300 meters southwest, and the small number of inhabitants in the settlement of S'Estanyol, Platja de s'Estanyol is rarely visited. On the southwest side, bushes spread out in front of the pine forest that begins behind. Several paths through the forest of the protected area and the coastal footpath via S'Arenal de Sa Canova to the settlement of Son Serra de Marina start here . Hotel Sa Punta de s'Estanyol is located on the northeast side of the beach and has been Mallorca's first nudist hotel since May 2013 .

Access

From the main road MA-12 between Artà and Alcúdia, the MA-3331 branches off towards the north to Colonia de Sant Pere and Betlem . From this, spur roads lead northwest to the coast, one through the Montferrutx settlement to the Camí de s'Estanyol coastal road . The coastal road ends in the southwest at the settlement of S'Estanyol. There are enough parking spaces in the relatively small settlement.
