The flat- tailed parakeets ( Platycercini) are a tribe from the order of the parrots (Psittaciformes). Thirteen genera with a total of 36 species are counted among them, including the budgerigars ( Melopsittacus ) and the flat-tailed parakeets i. e. S. ( Platycercus ). Three species are extinct. Flat-tailed parakeets are mostly native to Australia , New Zealand and some surrounding islands.
Systematics
The systematic position of the flat-tailed parakeet has not yet been conclusively clarified. Some taxonomists see it as a subfamily. DNA examinations indicate that the flat-tailed parakeets are a species group that is as old as the cockatoos and the lories . Then may also include the polytelis and the King parakeets and Rotflügelsittiche to this group. Should prevail this classification that are grass parakeets ( Neophema ) and probably the Sing Parakeets ( Psephotus ) provided in a separate tribe, that of Neophemini.
Appearance features
The flat-tailed parakeets are some of the most famous Australian parrot species. Most species have a long and stepped tail. They all have a black, gray or horn-colored beak. In contrast, there is no species that has a red beak. The wax skin is either completely or partly feathered. In most species the sexual dimorphism is only slightly pronounced.
