Pleasant Point is a small town in the Timaru District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is about 17 km northwest of Timaru in the plain of the Opihi River . The New Zealand State Highway 8 runs through Pleasant Point and connects the place with Timaru on the east coast and with Fairlie and Lake Tekapo inland.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1,278 inhabitants, 9.2% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
Pleasant Point is a small service center for the surrounding farms. The place is also known for its glass blowing and blacksmithing. In addition to agriculture in the surrounding area, viticulture is also a profitable business.
Attractions
The town is home to the Pleasant Point Railway Museum , where steam locomotives and one of two Model T Ford Railcar replicas around the world can be viewed. For nearly a hundred years, the Fairlie Branch , a branch of the Main South Line , ran through the city. The route was closed on March 2, 1968. A museum railway uses 2.5 km of the old route.
In the vicinity of the place one can see well-preserved Māori rock paintings depicting mystical beings and images of human bodies.
