Plebanus of Pisa

Plebanus (French Plivain or Pleven ; † 1206 ) was a Pisan merchant and by marriage lord of Batrun in the county of Tripoli .

He belonged to a wealthy Pisan merchant family who had settled in Tripoli .

In 1174 the Lord of Batrun, Wilhelm Dorel , died without male descendants. He and his wife Stephanie von Milly had a still unmarried daughter named Cäcilia who was now entitled to inheritance. Count Raimund III took care of the feudal lordship and the associated castle . of Tripoli personally about the imminent marriage of Cecilia. He had already promised his long-time follower, the Flemish knight Gérard de Ridefort , marriage to Cäcilia and enfeoffment with Batrun, when Plebanus' maternal uncle stood up for plebanus with the count. He paid the Count 10,000 Byzantines , whereupon he brokered the marriage between Cäcilia and Plebanus and enfeoffed Plebanus with the rule of Batrun. Since Plebanus, unlike Gerard de Ridefort, did not belong to the nobility until then, the process caused quite a stir. Gerard de Ridefort turned his back on the Count and joined the Knights Templar , where he rose to Grand Master in 1184.

In 1187 the rule of Batrun was conquered by the Ayyubid sultan Saladin . Plebanus was able to rule later, presumably as part of Henry VI's crusade. repossessed around 1197.

In 1202 Plebanus granted merchants from his hometown Pisa exemption from entry and exit duties. Like the Genoese in the neighboring Gibelet estate , the Pisans in Batrun enjoyed a friendly welcome at the manor of a compatriot.

With Cäcilia Plebanus had a daughter, Isabella, the Bohemond of Antioch († 1244), a son of Prince Bohemond III. of Antioch married. From the right of Isabella, Bohemond became lord of Batrun after Plebanus' death.
