Pobedino ( Russian Победино ) is a village (selo) in the Sakhalin Oblast in the Far East of Russia with 1144 inhabitants (as of 2013).
geography
The village is located on the island of Sakhalin , about 320 kilometers (as the crow flies) north of the Oblast capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk . The place belongs to the Raion Smirnych , whose administrative center, the urban-type settlement Smirnych , is 10 kilometers away in a south-westerly direction.
Pobedino is located on the Pobedinka River, a tributary of Poronai .
history
The place belonged under the name Koton from 1905 to 1945 to the prefecture of Karafuto , when Sakhalin after the Treaty of Portsmouth , which ended the Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905, belonged to Japan. As a result of the Second World War , the city came to the Soviet Union and was given its current name on October 15, 1947, in honor of the victory over Japan.
