Karel Poborský (born March 30, 1972 in Jindřichův Hradec ) is a former Czech football player .

Career

society

Karel Poborský began his career with Jiskra Třeboň . In 1984 he moved to Dynamo České Budějovice , where he stayed for ten years, apart from the 1987/88 season, when he played again for Třeboň. In 1994 he went to Viktoria Žižkov in Prague . Slavia Prague got him in the winter of 1996 . After the successful Euro 1996 Manchester United signed him . With the English style of play he got along badly, after two years he was deported to Benfica Lisbon .

In January 2001 he moved to Lazio Rome , where he became a public hero, mainly because of his two goals on the last match day of the 2001/02 season against Inter Milan , which Juventus Turin was still Italian champions. Nevertheless, he went back to his homeland to Sparta Prague in 2002 and became the highest paid player in the Czech league. In September 2005 he criticized coach Jaroslav Hřebík , whereupon his contract was dissolved and Poborský returned to České Budějovice in the 2nd division , where in 1991 his professional career had started.

He ended his career on Whit Monday 2007. In the summer of 2007, in addition to his future board position at his last club, České Budějovice, he also took over the position of technical director of the Czech national team. His nickname is Steve . It was created in the early 1980s when the Canadian downhill skier Steve Podborski was successful.

National team

On August 18, 2004, he became the first Czech national player to reach the 100-game mark. He played his first game for the national team on February 23, 1994 against Turkey. At the European Championship in 1996 he scored the decisive goal in the quarter-finals against the Portuguese national team . As a national player, he took part in the 1996 , 2000 , 2004 and 2006 World Cups.

Poborský was Czech champion in 1996 with Slavia Prague, 2003 and 2005 with Sparta Prague. With Manchester United he won the Premier League in 1997 . With the Czech national team he became vice European champion in England in 1996.
