Construction detail

Podul de Fier ( German  iron bridge , Hungarian Közötti híd ) is the name of a steel footbridge in the western Romanian city of Timișoara which crosses the Bega . It is located in the IV district of Iosefin and connects Strada Ady Endre with Strada Andrei Mureșanu .

history

With the increasing development of the fortress foreland at the beginning of the 20th century, the existing bridges over the Bega were no longer sufficient. This was especially true for the eastern Josefstadt, where there was no crossing between the bridges Podul Traian and Podul antefan cel Mare for a distance of almost one kilometer. When the former bridge structure was finally replaced by a concrete bridge from 1912, the opportunity was taken to reuse the old steel framework structure from 1871.

As a result, the 120-tonne structure was dismantled by the Austro-Hungarian State Railroad Company from Reșița by April 5, 1913 , and stored about 500 meters downstream at the former hat factory in Josefstadt am Begaufer. The foundation of the bridge was completed by October 31, 1914, but further work was interrupted as a result of the First World War.

In 1916, the Hungarian state railway Magyar Államvasutak was finally commissioned with the construction. In 1917 the reconstruction of the steel structure was completed. When the bridge was in place, it was found that the narrow streets did not allow the access ramps to be filled up, which is why the bridge can only be reached by stairs and can therefore only be used by pedestrians. The laying of the bridge cost a total of 70,000 Austrian crowns .

Legend

In the 1970s, journalists spread the legend, which has persisted to this day, that the steel structure of the bridge discussed here was built according to a drawing by Gustave Eiffel , the builder of the Paris Eiffel Tower . This rumor, which is also said of the previous construction of the neighboring bridge Podul Ștefan cel Mare, has not been confirmed after inspection of the construction plans.

Alternative names

According to the legend from the 1970s, the bridge is popularly called Podul Eiffel (German Eiffel Bridge ), another alternative name is Podul Metalic (German metal bridge ).
