The 2009/10 season of the Slovnaft Extraliga was the 17th regular event in the top division of ice hockey in Slovakia . The reigning champions of Slovakia were HC Košice . The only newcomer to the extra league was HK Spišská Nová Ves .

Game mode

The game mode of the league was changed again for the new season: In the main round, the twelve regular extra league participants played 44 games among themselves. In addition, each of these teams competed in three games against the Slovak U20 national team, which took part in the Extraliga in preparation for international tournaments under the name HK Orange 20. Since the number of participants was to be reduced from 13 to eleven for the following season, the two last-placed teams were relegated, while the third-last competed in the relegation against the champions of the 1st division .

Regular season

The preliminary round was clearly dominated by the Slovak capital club HC Slovan Bratislava . He showed outstanding performance both offensively and defensively, so that at the end of the season he scored the most goals (199), received the fewest goals against (101) and had a positive goal difference of +98. In addition, Slovan only lost seven of his 47 games and at the end of the preliminary round was already 21 points ahead of second place.

As in the previous year, the champions of the 2009/10 season were HC Košice , who prevailed with 4-2 wins against HC Slovan Bratislava and won the seventh Slovak title in the club's history.

Relegation

In the league delegation between the Extraliga and the first division, the third- bottom MsHK Žilina met the champions of the first division, the ŠHK 37 Piešťany . The former prevailed against the team from Piešťany and thus achieved relegation in the extra league, while Piešťany remained second class.
