The Polaris is a Finnish icebreaker that was built in 2015/16 at the Arctech Helsinki Shipyard for the Finnish Transport Authority. The ship began testing on April 22, 2016.
Tender
The technical requirements were published in a tender text by the Finnish Transport Authority on February 11, 2013. According to this, the new icebreaker must be at least equivalent to the strongest Finnish icebreakers in service in 2013 in terms of icebreaking ability ( ice class PC 4+). The various conditions for ice-breaking ability were also documented in the invitation to tender.
Ship description
The Polaris was built as hull number 510 at the Arctech Helsinki Shipyard in Finland at a price of 125 million euros . The ship is 110 meters long and around 24 meters wide, the maximum draft is 8 meters. The crew consists of 16 people.
The diesel-electric system consists of a total of seven diesel generators , of which two Wärtsilä 9L34DF with 4500 kW each and two Wärtsilä 12V34DF with 6000 kW each and a Wärtsilä 8L20DF with 1408 kW as port and emergency diesel. The propulsion is provided by three ABB - Azipod units consisting of a 6 MW Azipod in the bow and two 6.5 MW Azipods in the stern , with which a nominal speed of 17 knots in open water is achieved.
business
The Polaris has been optimized for escort icebreaking operations in the northern Baltic Sea . The bollard pull and the drive power are sufficient to break a flat ice thickness of 1.5 meters in continuous operation. In addition, the ship can be used in the summer months for emergency towing operations and to combat oil spills. This became necessary because the shipping traffic has increased strongly and more and more tankers for the transport of oil from Russia are on the move in this area. For this purpose, the ship was provided with appropriate equipment for towing and oil pick-up in open water and in ice.
particularities
The Polaris is the most powerful icebreaker flying the Finnish flag and the first icebreaker in the world with dual-fuel engines that can run on both low-sulfur marine diesel oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
